My work in church..........

For those still curious what my job in church when im serving on some of the Sundays, here is your answer :

In the proper term its called the Front Of House man (FOH) or the sound mixer engineer or the laymans term, PA (Public Address) man.

What do i do? I mix sounds from the church band and singers so that it is audible to the congregation as a nice blend and mix of music that suits the worship n praise. OR else they be just getting noise.

Is it a challenge? Yes it is coz ur job is practically to make sure all the sound balance, EQ and mixing is done properly. And then u gotta balance the singers voice so that Britney dont sound like Mariah. That involves lots of treble, bass, midrange frequency tunings. And its a live mix......means i mix as the music is still playing and so.......things are bound to happen. Feedback........guitar strings break......technical problems.........and alot of the time the PA crew gets THE STARE or the blame for this......when in fact its not really anything we can do always.

But its a fun job as we can play around (as in mix and try new effects) which gives us a chance to experiment creativity. ON another note.......mixing is an art also.......and the mixer console (That huge thing with lots of dials, buttons, knobs and lights and all) is like an instrument to make the best music projected out to the audience/congregation.

Mind you that rigging all these things together......music cables.......speaker cables.......mic cables.....sub woofers........consoles....DI boxes.......it takes lots of preparation n manpower. Event a simple event will take a few hundred meters of wiring and occasionally a few headaches.......

So the next time u go to a concert and the sounds were great and awesome.........before u clap to the musicians, thank the FOH and PA crew first coz it all comes from them as well.
